Points of Interest: Basildon

Situated in the borough of the same name inside the county Essex, Basildon lies a short thirty-two miles east of central London.

Named a new town in 1948 to accommodate for the population overspill of London following the war, Basildon has since prospered and grown into a densely populated area that is rightfully loved by its residents.

In a rather quirky turn of events, Basildon is home to a miniature version of the globally famous white Hollywood sign. Sized at just one-ninth of the size of the original it refers to, the white text spells out Basildon and was a somewhat original attempt by the local council to bring the town to the 21st century, and visitors with it. A novel solution, if you ask us!

As if this wasn’t enough to make Basildon notably unique, it also has played a role in UK elections over the years as a ‘barometer of public opinion’ – a place where trends in voting are set and assessed. This interesting split of Basildon resident’s voting practices has led to this humble location being watched carefully by politicians with each passing election.

For the families that are residents or visitors, there is much to do in Basildon. The renowned Hadleigh Castle that harks back to the 11th century has a commanding view of the beautiful scenery surrounding it and is very much worth a visit. The Olympics also have a home in Basildon, with the dazzlingly beautiful Hadleigh educational farm making good use of its spectacular flower display as a cycling path during the competition. The Imperial bird of prey academy is a further unique feather in the cap of the town, offering educational and striking experiences for locals and tourists.

A great place to be, and one we are just moving into with our brand-new Basildon Branch.
