Points of Interest: Coventry

Situated less than an hour away from the UK capital, Coventry is an up and coming metropolis offering everything from castles and cathedrals to trendy bars and eateries.

The city is home a vast number of attractions and features, including its best known landmark, St. Michael’s Cathedral. Sadly, the original St. Michael’s was largely in ruins after the city was devastated by bombs in 1940 but was later been rebuilt as a sign of hope.

Culture plays an important role in life for locals, with both the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum and Warwick Arts Centre located in the city. Attracting in the region of 280,000 visitors a year, the latter is one of the largest arts centres in the UK while the Herbert is perfect for learning a bit of local history.

The history of the city is clear for all to see with the Priory Undercroft telling the story of the 11th century cathedral and St. Mary’s Guildhall – once prison to Mary, Queen of Scots – providing a fascinating experience.

Other popular attractions include the Transport Museum which cements Coventry at the heart of the British motor industry, the state-of-the-art conference, exhibition, hotel and sports facility (Ricoh Arena), and the iconic Belgrade Theatre.

Some recognisable names are associated with this Midlands city; William Shakespeare jilted his Coventry fiancé on the eve of his wedding, George Eliot lived and went to school in Coventry; Sir Frank Whittle, Philip Larkin and even St. George, the dragon slayer, were born there.

Foodies are right at home as the city showcases some of the best curry houses in the country, including Turmeric Gold and Bengal Delight. However, locals and tourists are not limited to Asian cuisine: there are a number of Michelin-starred restaurants, such as Beef, Oscar’s, and Stag, just a stone’s throw from the city centre.

Coventry is a wonderful city to live and work in, as well as visit. Being just a few miles away from Birmingham and less than an hour from London, it has easy connections to the rest of the UK too.
