Newport is surrounded by beautiful landscapes including the Wye Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the undulating Vale of Usk, famous for its salmon fishing, the Brecon Beacons National Park and Forest of Dean – both less than an hour’s drive from Newport.
Its history dates back to a Celtic settlement 2000 years ago. The Normans settled in Newport and built a castle beside the river Usk in the 12 century, the remains of which you can see today. It’s location at the mouth of the River Usk has attraced visitors for centuries.
The discovery of the remains of a sea-going vessel in 2002 gives evidence of Newport as a centre of industry and trade in the mediaeval period.
Newport and the surrounding area boasts quality restaurants and a wide variety of cuisines, including some nationally recognised award-winning venues.
