How To Make Money On The Side

Making money on the side, often called a side hustle is becoming more popular in the UK. Having a small income stream alongside their main earnings allows people to supplement their income and provides more financial security. If you are thinking about trying to make money on the side, we have put together some tips to help you get started.

Find the right hustle:

Before you can start earning, you need to figure out what you are going to do. This comes with a variety of choices.

You need to decide how much time you want to invest in making money on the side, what skills you have that people are willing to pay for and how much money you are trying to earn. Once you have answered these questions, you can look at the variety of side hustle options. Some of the most common ones are selling handmade crafts, creating your own designs for t-shirts and opening a print on demand shirt store, teaching an online course, taking online surveys, ridesharing, dog walking, becoming a content writer, house or pet sitting, transcribing legal or medical notes, testing websites or apps and selling photography.

If you choose to sell physical goods like t-shirts or handmade jewellery, you will want to start by setting up an online store. You can do this through a platform like Etsy which allows you to sell things on their site or you can set up a simple website using a company like Wix. This gives you a platform so you can show your products and take payments without having to build your own site by hand.

If you want to offer a service, you should start by looking into companies that will help match you with people who need your service. For example, Uber is one of the biggest ride-sharing platforms available so signing up with them makes it easy to start earning right away. Some other companies include:

  • Udemy, which will pay you to teach a course.
  • Branded Surveys will pay you to take a survey.
  • TrustedHousesitters will help you find house or pet sitting jobs.
  • Fiverr will help you find writing jobs.
  • Checkealos will pay you to test websites and apps.
  • Shutterstock will pay you for photos.

Remember that whatever you choose as a side hustle will have to be done alongside your regular work. If you choose to make money on the side in a way that you find boring or tedious, you will likely avoid the work and eventually stop altogether. The best side hustle is something you can enjoy and that fits your schedule.

Once you have a side hustle picked out and you have gotten everything set up to start working, set a goal for yourself. This should be the amount of money you want to earn but also the amount of time you will spend. For example, you could decide you want to work for an hour each day for one month and your goal is to earn £500. This gives you a trial period for your work. If you find you are not making as much as you thought, the work is not enjoyable or you are unable to devote enough time to the business, you can always pick a new side hustle.
