Learning how to landscape a garden cheap can take some time, but having a beautiful piece of nature without the big price tag is worth every second. With that in mind, Everyday Loans have compiled a list of some of the best budget gardening tips.
Make a plan
Too many people want a great garden but don’t really have an idea of what they want the finished product to look like. This can lead to aimlessly wandering around a garden centre filling your trolly with random plants you like. To prevent this, measure your garden so you know how much space you have. Find the sunny and shady spots as well and mark them on your plan. Then get the dimensions of the plants you want to include. Once you have all that information, you can draw out a basic design for your garden including any hard landscaping and plants. This saves you from buying unnecessary items or filling your planting area too full.
Work with what you have
If you are looking for the cheapest way to landscape a garden, avoid drastic alterations. For example, if your garden is on a hill, don’t try to terrace it off or level it. This type of hard landscaping requires lots of money and lots of work. Instead, look for ways to fit the topography and soil type of your current yard into your plan.
Know your plants
Once you have a basic plan for your garden you should do some research on the plants you like. You need to know how big they get and what growing conditions they need. Some plants start out tiny but get huge. You should account for this in your initial plan. Other plants may need full sun or partial shade. Look at the sun conditions in your garden to get an idea of which plants can go where. Finally, some plants simply will not survive in certain conditions. For example, if you live near the seashore, your soil is probably high in salt. This can kill many varieties of plants. So, before you go to your local garden centre, take note of your soil type and the other conditions to keep from wasting money.
Buy plants young
Buying big beautiful plants is great because they give you an instant garden. The problem is, larger plants are more expensive. If you are trying to save money, it is better to buy younger plants and let them grow into the space. That way, if they do well, you get the plant you want and if they fail, you have not lost too much money.
Look for reputable garden centres
There are loads of places to buy plants but some are better than others. Reputable garden centres will work hard to provide the best varieties of plants and ensure their stock is healthy. Good garden centres will have happy looking plants, experts who can answer your questions and they may even have a guarantee on their plants. You want to make sure you are buying from a place like this to avoid purchasing dying or diseased products.
Free additions
If you are looking for things like stepping stones, pallets, pots or other gardening basics, there are plenty of websites where you can find these things for free. So before you go out and buy a tool or pot, check to see if someone is just giving it away.
Using these tips you can landscape your own garden and create a beautiful place to enjoy. If you need some extra money to help you get that garden of your dreams, Everyday Loans offers unsecured loans that can help.
